Elderly Veteran Was Able to Stay Housed

By Lois Healy | Project Leader, Army Veteran, CEO

In our changing economy we forget how increases in food, insurance and HOA dues make everyone vulnerable, but for the elerly and the disabled any increase in expenses puts them at risk for becoming homeless. We had an elderly Veteran that was referred by 211 because he was behind he had a substantial increase on his HOA dues and his homeowners insurance and a law firm for the HOA was threatening to file a lien and then foreclosure and take away his home. He is 82 and when we had him come in he was in a panic and didn't know what to do. I went over his budget and expenses and every month he was barely making ends meet because he was on a fixed income, so every increase in his expenses made him vulnerable.

The increase in HOA dues and insurance premiums was over $1980 and he didn't know what to do. I explained that we have a "Veterans Assistance Fund" that could help him by paying this amount. He said the payment had to be made by 5:00 PM that day or the attorneys representing the HOA would file the lien and foreclosure action. We called the attorneys and explained who we were and asked if they would take a business check for this Veteran's additional fees he was being charged and they said "yes".

We wrote the check out and hand delivered it to the attorneys for the HOA before the 5PM deadline.  The Veteran was so greatful and explained what a great weight had been lifted from his mind and coninued to say that usually he is bed ridden but he came right to us because he did not want to lose his home.

The donations that come in for Veterans Assistance Fund change lives of the Veterans that receive the assitance and they appreciate that these donations are there to assist them in their time of need. Thank you for making this happen for so many men and women that have served their country. Your donations do make a difference!
