The situation of children and adolescents with stage V chronic kidney disease (CKD) in dialysis is very complex due to the suspension of Venezuela's public transplant program. This project will allow 20 children and adolescents with kidney disease on dialysis, who attend the main pediatric hospital in Venezuela, to have timely and effective diagnostic procedures, paraclinical examinations, medical treatment and nutritional support while they wait for a kidney transplant as definitive health.
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a complex pathology in which the ability to excrete toxins is lost, hemoglobin levels, blood pressure and bone metabolism are altered. In Venezuela, the current crisis in the public health system does not allow for a timely response to kidney patients on dialysis, estimated at more than 6,000 people, 10% of whom are children and adolescents. CKD affects the development of these children and increases their morbidity and mortality. Therefore, we must act in time.
Through this project, ONTV will support 20 children with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) on dialysis at the JM de los Rios Hospital in Caracas. They will receive specialized medical treatment and diagnostic tests to ensure they are in the best possible condition prior to a possible kidney transplant.
The long-term impact will be a fundamental improvement in the quality of life of children who receive timely and specialised medical care. They will benefit from an appropriate level of medical care and have access to medicines according to their needs. Through the provision of medical care to these vulnerable children, the mortality rate associated with paediatric CKD will be reduced and they will have a better chance of being transplanted.
