On the 8th of April 2020, the north islands of the archipelago of Vanuatu were highly affected by the category 5 Tropical cyclone Harold. The islands of Santo, Malo and Pentecost were particularly affected by the path of the eye of the cyclone on those islands devastating the houses and gardens. ACTIV Association works for years with cocoa producers groups on Santo and Malo islands and women's groups (handicrafts and spices) on Pentecost island. We need funds to help them rebuild their future!
The TC Harold affected the remote communities from the islands of Santo, Malo and Pentecost from the archipelago of Vanuatu living thousands of people homeless and without resources. The state of Emergency declared on the 26th of March for the pandemic COVID19 makes the emergency for this cyclone even more difficult to assist those communities. The assessment for the impact of the cyclone is ongoing and already reports show major damages for the houses and the gardens for those islands.
With the funding we will assist the cocoa producers and the women's groups working with ACTIV Association to access first food and building equipment for the women workshop and materials for the repair of the processing facilities for the cocoa producers. We will work with the other islands producers and assist for the food supply and organise delivery of building materials from Port Vila or Santo to rebuild their workshops and processing facilities.
The long-term impact is to help them to build their workshop and processing facilities to generate again some income with their communities products when their houses are re-built with the national assistance. The pandanus used for the handicrafts and the cocoa trees will produce again in the next coming months are with appropriate facilities they will be able to generate income and improve their livelihoods.
