Fundraising and Progress Report #5

By Moses Tabe | Executive Director

Thank you for your generous support and you continued interest in helping FORUDEF to affect a meaningful change in the lives of individuals and communities in Cameroon.

Using donations given towards the juicing initiative, FORUDEF has been able to purchase a deep freezer, cooler, and large flask. These items have exponentially increased FORUDEF’s ability to scale up its production of juice. As a result, a group of 4-5 women are now able to produce 30-40 500 mL bottles of juice in a day. In addition, the deep freezer has allowed FORUDEF to purchase fruit when it is cheapest, and store it until it is needed. The ability to store fruit has also made juice processing malleable to demands for the processor’s time; fruit can be cut and frozen one day, and turned into juice the next without fear of it spoiling.

FORUDEF staff, namely, Susan Tabe, have been training participants in this initiative both in how to process juice from fresh, locally available fruits, and the nutritional value of consuming fruit.  As such, the juicing project is continuing to achieve its two-fold objective: to improve the nutritional standards of the community in which FORUDEF operates, and to equip women with vocational skills to generate income.

Although there is much interest amongst women’s groups and individuals in participating in this project, FORUDEF lacks both the financial and social capital to expand the initiative. FORUDEF has prioritized the purchase of professional-grade fruit processors with the next donations it receives. This purchase will expedite the process of fruit processing, which will, in turn, free up time for more women to be trained in fruit processing. As such, it is expected that once funding for fruit processors has been gained, the scope of this initiative will expand once again.
