Donations for May 7

By Paul Devine | Project Manager

Using Sports For Sociall Change has been able to provide both equipment and events for St. John, Virgin Islands children. Sports balls (over 300), baseball gloves (to outfit a team), soccer shin pads (14 sets) and numerous items of sports clothing have been provided during our 2009 events. Also in 2009, the first "Just Play" day was sponsored through USFSC. Over 125 children participated with 40 volunteers. The day, and the provision of equipment was met with great enthusiasm. For 2010, another "Just Play" sporting event for children is already being planned. Additional games and and increase in participation is expected. For 2010, additional equipment will be provided. Funding for the events is a combination of local donations and through Global Giving. The funding target is set at $10,000.

Planning meetings were held in January and february with additional meeting planned for May and twice-weekly meetings will be held through the summer. The next event is planned for October, 2010.

The core committee consists of 7 local St. Johnians. The project coordinator is Mr. Dean Doeling of the Nike Corporation. All planning is done through the core committee. The St. John Community Foundation is the fiscal agent for the project.

It is expected that by mid-September, 2010, the elements of the project will be established. Our goal is to raise 75% of the funds needed by mid September with remaining funding coming on the day of the event. All equipment, supplies and required field items will be in place by October 1, 2010. The volunteer base will be established by October 15 with a call to the community. All non-profit organizations who wish to partner shall be contacted and assigned duties. A donation request to the community of St. John has already started. Plans for an additional fundraiser will occur o/a August, 2010. It is hoped that a minimum of $3000 will come from Global Giving activities. Dean Doeling of Nike got the ball rolling by sent two donations of $250 each. One from a gift card and the other through Pay Pal. The Global Giving "WE" portal allows Nike, Inc. to provide a 50% match of any service fees, resulting in 95% of all donation being used directly for the events and equipment.

USFSC is looking forward to the second "Just Play" youth event.
