Towards quality tourism that respects the community.
Youth mobilize in historic Colonia in favor of tourism that respects the rights of children and adolescents.
In the month of May, 35 youth volunteers from 5 different Uruguayan states mobilized in Colonia to carry out the public awareness campaign "Uruguay against child sexual exploitation". This campaign emphasizes the promotion of fair and caring treatment of adolescents and children and the prevention of child sexual exploitation, particularly in tourist circuits.
How was the campaign carried out?
Diverse activities were carried out to raise awareness about the problem with key figures, such as community members, tourists, public and private institutions. Each tourist received a symbolic Passport to the campagin "Uruguay agasint child sexual exploitation", which asks them to commit to fair and caring treatment of children and adolescents, including the key verbs of the campaign:
See and act. The sexual exploitation of children and adolescents is a worldwide reality. Awareness is the first step toward action.
Listen and report. In the face of possible situations of child sexual exploitation, we all have the responsibility to report what we know.
Believe and protect. Listen attently to children and adolescents, without judging or criticizing them. The first step to protection is believing them when they talk about situations of abuse or violence.
Youth promoters raised awareness about child sexual exploitation in the community through providing information about the services available to report situations, such as the Blue Hotline (100).
The campaign "Uruguay against child sexual exploitation" is organized by the Claves Program and is supported by the local government of Colonia, the Ministry of Tourism, INAU as well as other associates such as: Colonia Shopping, CONAPEES, MIDES, Impulsa, INJU, OMI, Tres Cruces Shopping, Security and others.
