On behalf of the many children, women and men that received urgent medical care in just the last month…and from Olalo of Hope-Kenya, we want to say THANK YOU! Your generous donations allowed Olalo of Hope-Kenya to provide the funds needed to get the urgent medical care for those who would otherwise go without due to their poverty.

Malaria, typhoid, diabetes, asthma, injuries, intestinal viruses...all diagnosed and treated in May, and most are on the road to recovery. None of this would have been possible without the generosity of our supporters...without YOU!

Most times the need for urgent medical care comes to Olalo through others who are aware of the need. Sometimes, it just happens.

Like the day one of Olalo volunteers was talking with the pharmacist about our vitamin distribution plan when a woman runs in struggling to breathe. Gasping for breath, she pleaded for something to help but was told they couldn’t give her anything without permission from a doctor. In despair she said she had no money for a doctor. Our volunteer got her in a cab, brought her to the hospital and covered the cost of the cab, the hospital and the medication.

Sometimes, it just happens.

We are thankful he was in the right place at the right time, and because Olalo had the funds to get her help…that is all because of You and your generosity!

On June 15, GlobalGiving is running a campaign to match donations given online that day by 50%! If you would like to contribute to Olalo of Hope-Kenya to our medical, education or computer lab projects, check it out! It’s a great way to increase your donation without increasing your costs!

Thank you for joining with us at Olalo of Hope-Kenya to save lives and improve the health of those in need of urgent medical care!

With much appreciation….

Jacity is ready to head home from the hospital!
Jacity is ready to head home from the hospital!

You are saving lives!

I cannot thank everyone enough for your generous donations that continue to impact the lives of those who would go without urgent medical care due to their poverty. And I pass on to you also the “thank you” from the mothers in Oyugis who express their sincere thankfulness for helping their children in their time of need.

Early this year we learned of a young boy, Jacity, who was very ill with both malaria and typhoid and unable to pay for treatment. In many cases these two diseases require strong medications. Usually people are sent home to recover, but in Jacity’s case the doctor admitted him for two days because he had “very strong malaria.” Jacity is well today because Olalo was able to cover the hospital and medicine expenses...a total of $57.

We recently heard there were several cases of rabies/deaths among the people because of a rash of bites by dogs that roam the streets. Olalo has been called upon twice already since January to cover the cost of rabies shots. First for a young boy and later for an adult woman. They had been bitten by dogs, neither of which could afford the series of shots needed to stop the progression of the disease.

The World Health Organization reports an estimated 2,000 people die annually of rabies after being bitten by rabid dogs in Kenya.

“The medical costs associated with treatment after a person has been bitten by a rabid dog is estimated at US$170.00 in Kenya,” says James Macharia, Cabinet Secretary for Health. “This represents considerable financial hardship to a poor household.”

This is a true statement…it is a hardship for poor households and many times unattainable so they go without treatment with dismal consequences. Olalo has established good working relationships with local doctors and hospitals, so we are grateful the cost to Olalo has been much less than the $170 quoted by the Cabinet Secretary for Health.

You are also making life better in Oyugis!

Our multi-vitamin distribution program is a work-in-progress. Currently we are identifying the first 500 people to participate in the program. The program will kick-off with a gathering of our first recipients for a presentation by a local doctor to explain the benefits and importance of taking a daily vitamin.

It is an exciting time to see the progress being made to make life better in Oyugis, Kenya.

Thank YOU for making it all possible!

The month of December has always been one of my favorites, but thanks to YOU, it is now my absolute most favorite month ever…and I so humbly Thank You for it!

Your generosity helped Olalo of Hope-Kenya meet its Challenge goal of $8,200 through GlobalGiving even before the end of the campaign on 12/31. It is because of YOU that the poor of Oyugis, Kenya will be able to receive the urgent medical care and medications they would otherwise go without.

Having met our goal, we are excited to be able to increase the number of people we can supply with a daily multi-vitamin for a year. We are currently working out the logistics of a cost effective and simplified distribution plan to make it as easy as possible for families to receive their monthly supply of vitamins. We also want to ensure a level of accountability from families who have never participated in an ongoing program that will take them a little time getting used to.

The balance of our project funds make it possible for Olalo of Hope-Kenya to continue to pay for urgent medical care for both kids and adults who need help and would not seek treatment because of their poverty. We are now able to increase the number of people that we can get to local hospitals whether it be for doctor consultations (at $1 each, that’s a lot of visits!), or testing for prevalent diseases such as typhoid or malaria, medications, antibiotics, x-rays, overnight hospital stays and other medical needs that arise.

Olalo heard from a young man whose mum was extremely ill but was recovering well after our volunteers got her to the hospital. “…they took her to the hospital for medication. Thanks for helping save her life for me, she is the only thing I have and live for...God bless you and your family.”

We are excited to be able to expand our reach to those in need. When we get to hear back from those we’ve helped it’s a bonus day for us.

You will be able to access the project reports to see how we are progressing by signing into our GlobalGiving project. You can also sign up to receive the Olalo of Hope-Kenya newsletter by emailing us at Olalo.of.hope@gmail.com for updates and to learn about a new upcoming project on GobalGiving.

Thank you again for your support! You are saving lives, giving hope and restoring health to the poorest of the poor. Watch for our next project on GlobalGiving. Enhancing, improving and saving lives is addicting!
