This project directly addresses a critical food shortage for 60 families at Tikondane Community Centre in Katete district of Eastern province in Zambia, where insufficient harvests and rising prices threaten severe hunger starting in November up until April. By providing support before August 2026, you ensure these families, especially vulnerable children, have the necessary resources to maintain health and avoid sickness during the most difficult months of the year.
The community faces a predictable yet sever food crisis each year, driven by depletion of home-grown maize. By November, home maize supplies are exhausted and local market supplies begin to dwindle. As early as late July, the price of maize begins to rise. During this time, wholesalers & black- market sellers command the highest bids, making affordable food inaccessible to many. Without intervention, families face severe hunger during the lean season which lasts from November through April.
This project aims to secure maize for 60 families before prices become high. By raising the necessary funds to purchase maize before August, we can avoid peak prices that characterize later months. Tikondane utilizes homemade silos specifically designed to stock the purchased maize. This ensures these families have access to affordable food throughout the lean season, directly preventing hunger. In addition, Tikondane encourages families to supplement maize with other grains & vegetables.
This project directly benefits 60 families. It solves the challenge of families being unable to afford maize during the lean season, which occurs when they run out of home-grown supplies & are priced out of the market by wholesalers & black-market sellers. This project extends beyond immediate hunger relief: -Avoiding the hunger season will contribute to more stable family incomes & a foundation for growth. -The project will lead to improved school attendance for children in these families.
