From the outset, one of the goals of the Ultimate Peace founders was to build capability in the Middle East so that in the long term the organization could be largely run by locals. This is a long process, but there are many signs that this is taking place. None is greater than watching the LIT program graduates ask for, and accept, responsibilities within the organization.
This year, a group of LIT program graduates asked to begin a Middle East advisory group, to ensure that the perspectives they can bring are front and center in strategic planning about Ultimate Peace's future. They brought a proposal to the Board of Trustees, which gladly took them up on the opportunity. This past fall the advisory group took shape, and representatives of it will meet with the Board at its next meeting. We are very excited to get their viewpoints about concrete steps we can take to grow the organization.
The LIT program continues to have 15-20 participants per year. It is a three year program which teaches leadership skills both on and off the ultimate field, and as important brings together a diverse group of teens who form important and lasting relationships. Graduates of the program are making an impact in every facet of their lives.
