General summary
NGO Ba Futuru through the funding support from Grant Challenge Canada implemented an unlocking love film about “Unlocking Sexual and Reproductive Health in Timor-Leste” project was able to show a profound impact through using innovative modern technology, mini projectors so that films could be shown to large numbers of youth. Twelve youth Changemakers were trained to organize viewer groups, screen the films with mini projectors and hold discussions with youth participants. Surveys helped to gauge changes in knowledge, attitudes and practices of the youth participants. The project offered a space for 1,363 youth to view at least one of the various films (less than originally planned due to the COVID pandemic). Out of the total 1,029 youth that took part in the follow-up survey weeks after having watched the films (some that watched the films only, and others that watched the films and participated in discussion groups) 88% of the youth reported being more motivated to access to SRHR services.
One of the youths who participated in the program stated, "In my family, my parents never had a discussion with me about sexual reproductive health issues including menstruation. They considered that this issue is taboo to talk about. However, when I participated in this program, I found that it was very helpful. Due to the fact that the discussion only involved youth, we felt free to talk and share experiences from our own lives. I think this information is very important to share with my other friends and family members. I found that the way the project incorporated film discussion is innovative because we were able to discuss and express our ideas through the film characters. This way we would not offend other people since it did not specifically mention a real-life event of another person.”
In the pre-survey only 29% of the youth reported being confident to speak to the others about SRHR, and after they watched the films and participated in a discussion group 63% of the youth reported being confident to speak to the others about SRHR.
