Our University Computer Assistive Project became inABLE’s newest lifeline project in 2022; to help Kenyan law students with visual impairments to reach their full potential and complete their legal university education. GlobalGiving donations allow us to gift blind law students a laptop each, equipped with assistive technology and vital computer skills training. Allowing them to transition from Braille to acquire digital skills that enable them to seek resources, study and complete assignments independently.
Braille is the primary language for visually impaired people, but assistive technology promotes more inclusivity, digital accessibility, and independence in the daily lives of people with visual impairments. Braille translation is a lengthy process, and information is prone to distortion, affecting its original meaning. It means that blind law students lose valuable time waiting to receive their grades, which impedes their learning process compared to their counterparts. On the other hand, assignments completed in Braille are bulky.
Hence, every blind law student gifted with a laptop will have a crucial lifeline in their hands. These laptops will be equipped with assistive technology allowing them to double up as a great learning resource and an essential communication tool for people who don’t interact with Braille. It’s a great digital accessibility tool that will help bridge the gap between visually impaired and sighted lawyers because opportunities are endless when we can all access the power of the Internet.
inABLE is grateful for all the continued support that we have received that will help change lives forever and bring blind law students one step closer to joining the workforce as advocates, judges, change-makers, and future leaders ready to uplift the next generation. So far, we have raised $50 from our $20,000 goal, and we need your help in achieving the target and helping blind law students get access to critical information.
