Since the beginning of the implementation of the project Un Batey Más Verde (UBMV or a Greener Bate), the UBMV team has focused on developing the programming that is equitable and aligns with the social reality of Batey Libertad. We have established agreements with local key stakeholders and institutions such as, the Maizal Municipal Council, the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance, and the Batey Libertad Neighborhood Council. Thanks to these partnerships, the Environmental Leaders Committee was born in the batey.
Guided by the Committee, we have hosted three workshops aimed at raising awareness about environmental issues and promoting collective action. We also organized a community cleanup day that took place October 2nd this year. This event was made possible by the participation of over 70 community members, and the coordination between our local institutions responsible for waste management in the municipality.
We continue to support and provide resources for our communal waste management system we established, working with community leaders to care for our 25 public waste receptacles. Additionally, we have utilized our Reading Hour at the Center for Learning as an opportunity to teach younger members of the community about the environment and how they can take care of their community.
Un Batey Más Verde has been very well received by the community, the project has motivated neighbors and leaders to grow their environmental awareness and to care about the environmental crisis impacting their locale. We are motivated by the success of the program so far, and will continue to support the community in its mission to create a cleaner environment!
