This project aims to build a greener and healthier Batey Libertad by deepening the community's commitment to environmental sustainability through a multi-phase educational and action-based approach. In its expanded form, the initiative includes community-wide environmental education campaigns, an environmentally focused summer camp serving approximately 200 students, regular clean-up days, and the implementation of a waste management and classification system tailored to the community's needs.
Batey Libertad faces an increasingly dire waste management crisis. Currently, the community does not have any public waste collection system, leading to improper waste disposal, open-air trash burning, and severe community health risks in contaminated water, air and soil. Limited environmental education reinforces unsustainable habits, and youth have few opportunities to engage with climate action. This lack of awareness and infrastructure perpetuates a cycle of environmental harm.
The project combines education and action: it implements a waste management system with new trash bins and household-level classification tools, trains local collection staff, and delivers environmental education through a summer camp, workshops, and visual campaigns. Community cleanups reinforce shared responsibility and build a culture of environmental care.
The project will reduce pollution, improve public health, and shift community attitudes toward sustainability. A trained waste team and public trash infrastructure will ensure long-term functionality. Children educated through camp and school initiatives will grow into environmentally responsible adults, ensuring the project's impact lasts for generations.
