Due to the overwhelming amount of abuse women face in Eastern Uganda and the lack of facilities available to them, WORI Uganda wishes to construct a shelter to provide temporary refuge and basic necessities for victims of domestic violence. In addition, it will provide psychological counseling and emergency medical care to the victims of domestic violence, as well as providing legal aid for the victims, whilst raising awareness on domestic violence
In the eastern region of Uganda, 75% of women are abused before the age of 45, according to the Uganda Women's Network gender based violence survey. At Jinja Central police station, 39 cases of violence are reported and registered monthly. Increasingly, women come to seek services after the police recommend them to civil society organisation for assistance. WORI sees the need for these women to have access to emergency medical care, a lawyer and often a place to spend the night.
We aim to build the first shelter for domestic violence in the region in order to: To provide temporary refuge and basic necessities for women victims of domestic violence. Provide psychological counselling and emergency medical care to the women victims of domestic violence. Provide legal aid to the women victims of and gender domestic violence. Create awareness on domestic violence for the purpose of effecting prevention and redress through information Resource Materials.
WORI has extensive experience in working with women who have been abused. We will continue to work with communities, explaining how they can overcome violence and reduce the amount of women being hurt. This increased awareness will increase the number of victims that report cases and seek counselling, health care and legal aid as well as a safe shelter. We have faith that with our experience, we will be able to not only administer but provide lasting solutions survivors of violence.
