PROGRESS REPORT: LITTLE BY LITTLE
Hand in Hand Eastern Africa takes its members through an economic empowerment training and does so to empower the members create enterprises. Hand in Hand does this through a group approach and all members mobilized together are identified by the groups they belong to. For the Empower 220 Women with $20 for 2 chicks project, Tuiyomoi Self Help Group was selected.
Group’s profile
Tuiyomoi Self Help Group is a group found in Ndanai Sub location in Sotik Sub County of Bomet County in Kenya. It is a group consisting of 20 active members. The group joined Hand in Hand EA November 2018 and have gone through all the trainings. It was started with intention to uplift the members socio-economic condition.
One of the members, a mother of six children, lives in Kimaltemen village, Sotik Sub County in Bomet County, with her family. She lives in her two-acre farm. She is a member ofTuiyamoi Group, the group consisting of 20 active members. Her economic activity is mixed farming. The farming practices are dairy farming, poultry farming and vegetable farming. She has two-acre farm which she uses for farming. She has been doing in small scale which could rarely satisfy her daily needs.

Like other members of Tuiyomoi self-help Group she was pleased with the coming of HIH EA to Kimaltemen village. She was fascinated by the Savings, Enterprise, Financial management and Technical skills trainings. On saving training, she learnt that one should have discipline in order to realize the set goal. She confessed that before she never used to save, but now with the acquired knowledge she manages to save some amount on monthly basis via the group merry-go-round and Table Banking respectively. From the enterprise training, she learnt that businesses usually collapse due to lack of proper management and information. On Financial management, she learnt that people usually have problems when repaying loan because of lack of financial planning and multiple loans.
She has also learnt how to keep up to date records like sales records, debtors and creditors records. She also keeps farm records which help her monitor the progress of her daily activities. The records have greatly helped her monitor daily sales and hence being able to calculate the profit she makes for the month. In the month of September 2021 she was among the members who benefited from the GlobalGiving poultry value chain, she received 4 chicks which are currently laying eggs. The poultry enterprises has enable her to earned an income. She gets an average of ksh 200 per week from the sale eggs, through this she has been motivated to add more chicken. She intends to expand her poultry business for more income.
