It has been an unpredictable few months around the world, in Kenya and in Bomet where our project is domiciled, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Our communities have been working towards survival from day to day. When the first cases of Covid-19 were reported in Kenya on 13th March 2020, it was shocking and most businesses and individuals went into panic mode. Due to government regulations movement was restricted .The immediate need identified among our small holder farmers between April and June was the need for information pertaining to COVID-19. Our field officers were affected by the cessation of movement regulations but kept in touch with the communities through giving credible information on Covid-19 .The information pack included Symptoms of the disease, how to minimize the spread of the disease and what to do incase one suspected they had the disease. That was the ongoing concern during the first three months: The protection of lives before livelihoods.
In the coming month we plan to resume training for our poultry project .We plan to pair Covid-19 sensitization on the ground with the implementation of our project .We already have a partner who will help with technical support in terms of training and market linkage in poultry farming. Projecting on the next few months, prices of agricultural produce will be high as we approach the festive season and thus we plan to empower our farmers to make more money during this period from their Poultry sales.
We are still fundraising for the project and we encourage support from all quarters to enable the project to create Sustainable livelihoods for 220 farmers along the poultry value chain in Sotik sub-County, Kenya
