Field Update

SmartAID Turkey team with  Adana & Hatay Municipalities

Nearly three years after the devastating earthquakes that struck southern Turkey, the recovery across many communities in Adana and Hatay is still ongoing.

Tens of thousands of families continue to live in temporary shelter sites while social and health workers support them through the long process of rebuilding their lives. In this environment, one lesson has become increasingly clear: technology is no longer a secondary tool in disaster response it has become a basic need. Without reliable connectivity, power, and digital coordination systems, frontline workers struggle to reach the communities that depend on them.

To address this gap, SmartAID Turke team has been working closely with the Adana and Hatay municipalities, providing technological support to the social workers, health professionals, and aid organizations operating inside shelter communities.

At the center of this effort is the SmartAID Technological Coordination Hub, installed inside the facilities of the Adana Municipality.

The hub acts as a central platform where local government departments, NGOs, and humanitarian groups can connect, share information, and coordinate their activities across the region.

By providing stable connectivity, power systems, and digital coordination tools, the hub allows multiple organizations to plan operations together, share data, and prevent overlapping efforts, ensuring that assistance reaches more people efficiently.

A SmartAID field technician working with the team explained: “In large-scale disasters, dozens of organizations often arrive with the best intentions. But without a shared technological platform, coordination becomes extremely difficult.

The hub allows everyone the municipality, health services, and aid groups to operate from the same digital environment.”

From the hub in Adana, teams are supporting shelter camps across both Adana and Hatay, providing connectivity solutions and portable power units that allow social and health workers to operate effectively in areas where infrastructure is still unstable.

Social workers are now using SmartAID supported systems to digitize case management, helping them register displaced families, identify vulnerable individuals, and track ongoing assistance programs. Instead of relying on fragmented paper documentation, workers can now upload and share information through connected platforms, enabling faster coordination with municipal departments and humanitarian partners.

Health professionals working in temporary clinics are also benefiting from the technology. With reliable power and connectivity, they are able to maintain digital patient records, coordinate referrals, and consult remotely with specialists in other parts of Turkey.

A municipal social worker in Adana described how the system has transformed their work: “Before, we were working in isolation, often duplicating efforts without knowing what other teams were doing.

Now, through the SmartAID hub, we can see the bigger picture and coordinate our support much more effectively.” Beyond coordination, the connectivity systems installed by SmartAID are also helping residents of the shelters themselves.

Families are able to contact relatives, access online public services, receive updates about housing programs, and stay connected with the outside world — something that plays a critical role in restoring a sense of normalcy after disaster.

Standing beside one of the deployed connectivity units supporting a shelter community, a member of the SmartAID team reflected: “Technology will never replace the human dedication of the social and health workers here.

But when they have the right tools when they can connect, share information, and coordinate their impact multiplies.

The hub in Adana is helping make that possible.” As recovery continues across the earthquake-affected regions of Turkey, SmartAID remains committed to supporting local authorities, frontline professionals, and humanitarian partners, ensuring that technology strengthens both immediate response and long-term resilience for the communities rebuilding their lives.
