Thank you for supporting this project to protect girls and prevent gender based violence.  This report from Brighter Communities Worldwide staff members Sonia and Richard tells how important the lifeskills programme is in bringing confidence and a way forward to young women.

'A young woman named Jackline embarked on a journey of empowerment that would reshape her life and the lives of those around her.

At just 23 years old, Jackline has already experienced the trials and tribulations of early motherhood, a common occurrence among teenage girls in her community. Yet, despite the challenges she faced, Jackline remained determined to create a brighter future for herself and her child.

The turning point for Jackline and 34 other young mothers came when they were invited to participate in a transformative 5-day life skills training held in Kipkelion. The program, organised by Brighter Communities Worldwide, aimed to empower these young women with knowledge and skills to navigate the Triple Threat of Teenage pregnancies, gender-based violence, and HIV.

As they immersed themselves in the program, they were exposed to a wealth of invaluable information and practical skills. From understanding reproductive health to learning about contraception and HIV prevention, the training covered a wide range of topics essential for empowering young mothers to take control of their futures.

One participant's story, however, shed light on a dark reality that still plagued their community. A teenage mother revealed that she had undergone Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in her youth, a practice deeply ingrained in certain cultural traditions. Her courageous disclosure served as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address harmful practices and protect the rights of young girls.

Jackline emerged with a newfound sense of purpose and determination. Reflecting on her experience, she expressed her gratitude to Brighter Communities Worldwide for the invaluable knowledge and skills imparted during the program. "I promise to reach out to other young mothers and teach them what we have been taught," she affirmed, determined to break the cycle of misinformation and empower her peers.

Through the life skills program, Jackline and her fellow participants not only gained vital knowledge but also developed the attitude and skills necessary to confront life's challenges head-on. Armed with newfound confidence and resilience, they are ready to chart a course towards a brighter, more empowered future.'

Thank you for your part in making this happen.  If you would like to donate again, please mark your calendars for the week of April 8th to 12th when GlobalGiving's Little by Little campaign will match all donations up to $50 at 50%.
