Renovate a Well at Chinyika Village

By Adam Ramadhan | Project Officer

1.  INTRODUCTION

Direct Relief Tanzania is implementing a community-based water access initiative in Mpwapwa District, with the goal of improving access to safe and reliable water for rural households. This progressive report provides an update on the renovation of a community well that previously posed serious challenges to residents due to its poor condition and unreliable water supply in Chinyika village

Access to clean water remains a critical challenge in Mpwapwa District, where many communities depend on unsafe or distant water sources. The renovation of the Chinyika well represents an important step toward reducing water scarcity, improving hygiene, and enhancing the overall well-being of the community.

2. SITUATION BEFORE PROJECT
Before the intervention, the Chinyika community was in a severely deteriorated state. The structure was damaged, the water point was unsafe, and frequent breakdowns made it difficult for community members especially women, children, and the elderly to access water. Many residents were forced to walk long distances to alternative sources, some of which were unsafe and exposed them to waterborne diseases.

The limited access to clean water negatively affected household health, school attendance, and productive economic activities. Community members expressed consistent concern about the risks associated with the well and the urgent need for renovation.

3. PROJECT PROGRESS AND ACHIEVEMENTS
Despite financial constraints, Direct Relief Tanzania successfully initiated the renovation of the Chinyika well. The organization worked closely with community leaders and residents to mobilize local participation and resources. Through this collaborative approach, the well structure was rehabilitated, damaged components were repaired, and the surrounding area was improved to enhance safety and usability.

The renovation has significantly improved water availability for the community. Residents can now access water more easily and safely, reducing the time spent fetching water and minimizing exposure to health risks. This progress demonstrates the effectiveness of community-driven solutions even under limited funding conditions.

4. COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION AND RESOURCE MOBILIZATION
Although the project faced underfunding, Direct Relief Tanzania adopted a participatory approach by mobilizing the Chinyika community to contribute their own resources. Community members volunteered labor, provided locally available materials, and supported construction activities. This collective effort strengthened local ownership of the project and ensured that the renovation could proceed despite financial limitations.

The strong community involvement not only reduced project costs but also enhanced sustainability. Community members have developed a shared responsibility for maintaining the well, ensuring its long-term functionality and impact.

5. CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED
The main challenge faced during implementation was insufficient funding to fully meet all project needs, including additional protective infrastructure and long-term maintenance mechanisms. Rising material costs and limited access to technical equipment also posed constraints. However, these challenges were mitigated through community support, adaptive planning, and efficient use of available resources.

6. APPEAL FOR CONTINUED SUPPORT
While the renovation of the Chinyika well marks meaningful progress, the need for safe water in Mpwapwa District remains urgent. Many communities still lack reliable access to clean water, and additional improvements are necessary to ensure sustainability and expand impact.

Direct Relief Tanzania kindly appeals to donors, partners, and well-wishers to continue supporting this project. Your contributions will help complete remaining works, strengthen maintenance systems, and extend safe water access to more households across Mpwapwa District. Continued support will directly improve health outcomes, reduce water-related hardships, and restore dignity to vulnerable communities.

Together, we can ensure that every family in Mpwapwa District has access to safe and reliable water.
