Greetings, Friends and Supporters of ODC,

As one of ODC’s international board members, I am again writing the quarterly report while Founder and Headmaster Chhaiya Im continues his participation in the year-long Atlantic Fellows Equity Initiative Program. Chhaiya traveled to the Philippines this quarter, and he will soon leave for Malaysia. All of us at the school continue to see Chhaiya applying his newly developed knowledge and skills to improve education equality on our campus.

This quarter has brought Cambodia’s expected rainy season weather to campus. The temperatures are a bit cooler most days as the clouds often shield the sun. With our raincoats donned, we have been busy as bees working inside and outside of our classrooms.

For the second consecutive quarter, ODC teachers continue to develop weekly Khmer cultural connections lesson plans that are personally relevant to our students. We are witnessing how having our students learn English in the context of their own beautiful country and traditions brings them increased understanding and national pride. Then, when we recognized errors in our beginning phonics textbooks we decided to develop our own ABC key words, sounds, and gestures so we can teach phonics most effectively to our youngest English learners. We developed our own posters, flashcards, and videos. Please take a moment to watch one of our video accomplishments here.

ODC was pleased to welcome four graduate students and their faculty supervisor from Augustana College in the US for three weeks in August. The graduate students conducted reading and pronunciation testing on every ODC student, and then they infused every classroom with their enthusiasm and love for teaching children as they assisted our teachers. ODC students love having international volunteers in their classrooms to learn from and with whom to practice their emerging English skills.

The support staff at ODC grew in the third quarter. We recently welcomed a local 15-year-old to volunteer as a teaching assistant in two classrooms two days per week. She has excellent English skills and a compassionate nature that is helping our students develop confidence in their own English skills. We hired an enthusiastic new accountant who is being mentored by Chhaiya and our previous accountant. We also hired a local woman and an ODC student to help with grounds and facility maintenance, both positions especially needed as our physical campus expands. This quarter the ODC team participated in an event that served as a team builder like no other! Thanks to the generosity of Angkor Zipline, we were treated to an afternoon of professional ziplining through Angkor Archeological Park. It was an afternoon that found us bravely zipping across nine wires high above the forest canopy, gingerly walking across two suspended sky bridges and a spiderman bridge, and dropping in an abseil descent.

We also have several campus updates to report this quarter. The most eye-catching accomplishment was that we erected a large sign, solar light, and Cambodian flag at our front gate announcing who we are. Now everyone passing by knows we are an English school! We finished building a wall around the rest of campus to increase student safety. We extended the veranda to wrap around the south side of the school building, which adds new teaching and learning spaces, and installed two ceiling fans. We covered our parking pads and added solar lights to increase safety at night and shield student and staff bikes and motos from the sun and rain. It is never fun sitting on a seat that has been baking under the Cambodian sun or getting soggy from a rainstorm.

Last, our conversations about potential partnerships with several other education-based international organizations continue in earnest. I will provide a summary of these discussions in the year-end report. Please stay tuned!

Our July fundraising event through GlobalGiving was a considerable success — thank you! Thank you for your continued support in our goals, efforts, accomplishments, and ambitions. Your belief propels us forward as we look ahead and imagine our 2025 goals.

Thank you!

Kathy Jakielski
