'Ultimate Frisbee' - Asha in action

With her mother working as a domestic maid and father, an auto driver, Asha did not look back once she found her calling combined with the natural talent of sport. Playing a mixed sport from a lower socio -economic background was considered nearly impossible. Asha has now become the role model for all the girls in her society as they look up to her.

Asha is the student of Teach For India Fellow- Shashank and is currently in grade 10 at Sri Siddhartha High School.  Shashank had started the sport as an intervention to mainly address gender discrimination and deep-rooted patriarchal mind-set. Students from Sri Siddhartha High School in Banda Maisamma Nagar, Lower Tank Bund have been trained in Ultimate Frisbee and had participated in major tournaments including Hyd Hat in December 2016 at Aga Khan Academy, Hyderabad Invitational in March 2017 & national tournament Usha Udaan 2017.

It was in September 2016 that Shashank, who as part of his fellowship, introduced the sport. A self-refereed and mixed gender sport, it was approved by the International Olympic Committee and shall be a part of the next Olympics. Shashank’s attempt was also in sync with one of the seventeen United Nations Sustainable Development goals — Gender Equality. The sport, at any point, has three female and four male players.

Shashank says “Every youngster’s story sends shivers down your spine and that is why we decided to name it Team Goosebumps. It is recognised by the Ultimate Players Association of India, the body that oversees all the related sporting activities in the country,”

Also known as Ultimate around the world, the fast-paced sport, though is in a fledgling state in the India, in the last couple of years has garnered many fans particularly in Hyderabad. We wish Asha & team all the best for their future.
