I am Janhvi and the Teach For India Fellowship is a dream come true for a girl whose final year exams just ended and who wanted to do something big for the country instead of the daily 9-5. So after a rigorous selection process, I got into this organisation and my journey started with a training institute in Pune, where I was taught about how being a Fellow plays such an important role in the lives of students and I was made aware of my roles and responsibilities and also about classroom culture.
After I came to Hyderabad, I had to manage108 Students alone, which was a big task since I was the only Fellow there for so many students at the same time. But as time wentby, I connected with them deeply and now I don't call them my students but my kids. The Students I have the privilege of teaching come from diverse backgrounds, with varying levels of academic ability ranging from RC level -0.5 to 5.5. However, the challenge presented itself with their math proficiency, which was only at 27%. Thus, creating a holistic learning environment that caters to their educational and personal growth was a daunting task. To tackle this issue, I initially started teaching English for two months, establishing a foundation before moving on to math with the help of other Fellows. Moreover, the breakdown in behavioural patterns, such as lack of empathy and collaboration, was another challenge that needed to be addressed. To do so, I introduced daily morning meetings to inculcate essential values and extra math classes to enhance their learning.
As a Fellow, I have to prepare for the class, school work, students' learning, and my own learning, and maintain the classroom culture theme while collaborating with other organizations to benefit my students'
education.
Although the journey has been challenging, my students, co-fellows, and PMs have been my support system. I aspire to create a classroom that fosters a love for learning, ambition, and personal growth. Working towards these goals and providing quality education to every child in India is my ultimate dream.
