Education is an essential part of breaking the cycle of poverty. This project will provide a university education for 13 girls and 8 boys from the Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos (NPH) home for orphaned, abandoned and disadvantaged children in Nicaragua. These students have overcome great odds to graduate from high school and be accepted into university. Your donation will help them achieve their dream of becoming professionals who are able to support themselves.
Nicaragua is one of the poorest countries in Latin America. One in four children is not in school. The duration of compulsory education is six years and only 35% of children are enrolled in secondary school compared to 88% in the U.S. Fewer than 12% of eligible youth enroll in post-secondary education compared to 73% in the U.S. The 21 students from NPH Nicaragua who have overcome these odds are ready to begin university. Obtaining a degree will allow them to compete in a global job market.
With support from caring people around the world, we are raising thousands of children in nine countries. We transform their lives by providing a safe home environment where they may stay until they are prepared to live independently. Education is a top focus; all children have the opportunity to learn a trade or attend university. Access to a university education will help prepare these students to become productive citizens who can become leaders in their own communities.
Since its founding in 1954, NPH has assisted more than 17,000 children. Thousands are now self-sufficient adults with careers as teachers, doctors, accountants, psychologists, social workers and more. Many program graduates now support their extended families and their work has a positive impact on their entire community. Appreciating the impact NPH has had on their lives, some work for the homes while others sponsor children, organize fundraisers, or serve as our ambassadors.
