Mexico continues to battle Covid-19, with a significant amount of new cases and hospitalizations due to the Delta variant. A large swath of the older poplutation has received at least one dose of the vaccine and all people over the age of 18 are currently eligible for vaccination.

Unfortunately, because the vaccines are not yet available to younger teenagers, the boys at Refugio remain largely under quarantine.  Schools, however, are scheduled to reopen in September for the 2021-2022 school year.  Activities with visitors and volunteers continued to be restricted, but volunteers who are fully vaccinated are slowly returning to begin working with the boys again.

While the boys are still confined nearly all day within the home, funding from donors has allowed a number of safe, outdoor activities.  A big highlight was a trip to a paintball facility where the boys spent hours running, hiding and stratagizing.  They were also able to travel to a professional-level soccer field to play soccer.  They enjoyed several trips to the beach where they body-surfed, rode boogie board, swam and played games.  Donor funds have allowed us to maintain our bicycles so that the boys can ride on the beach boardwalk.

One of the older boys, Eduardo, contnues to lead fitness classes for the boys and is paid a stipend for his time through donor funds.  There is a group of boys who can't attend Eduardo's class due to their school schedules.  They have taken what they've learned about from Eduardo and do group workouts among themselves -- a true testament to how choosing an active, healthy lifestyle is taking root among these young men.

The rooftop garden and composting system set up using donor funds have expanded.  The young gardeners are currently growing papaya, tomatoes, lettuce, strawberries, beets and cucumbers.  As the garden expands, more of this fresh produce will be used in the Refugio kitchen.

We also continue to teach classes on nutrition and making healthy choices once a week, and provide the boys healthy meals and snacks.  Healthy food and snacks for all our boys and staff will always be one of our highest monthly expenses and donor funds have been critical in this regard, particularly during the pandemic.

With a great start to the  covid-19 vaccination campaign in Matzatlan, we are hopful that the situation will further improve in the next quarter.  We are anxious to restart our outreach to the boys' extended families this fall.  Our goal is to teach healthy habits and lifestyle changes to the families, further expanding our impact in Mazatlan and surrounding communities.  We thank you for your continued support!
