#MenEndFGM is an award winning movement rallying men & boys to join the quest to end FGM, child marriage and other related harmful practices. According to Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS) 2014, Kenya's national prevalence of FGM stood at 21%. However, 22 of the 47 counties have FGM prevalence which is way above the national level, some as high as 94%. Despite being key members in the society, men's involvement remains low. #MenEndFGM seeks to bridge this gap by engaging men as allies
Most communities in Kenya are patriarchal in nature and men are custodians of culture and key decision makers who wield immense power over different aspects of women's lives as fathers, elders, judges and religious leaders. Unfortunately, men are not allowed to witness what happens during the actual cutting and many have no idea about physical, emotional and health issues related to FGM. This project aims to identify and train male champions who can spread the End FGM message within their peers
The project will identify, train and equip 20 Male champions in each of the 22 FGM hotspot counties in Kenya with necessary information on health, physical and emotional effects of FGM and other harmful practices. The trained champions will then be expected to train other men within their communities, attend community dialogues as well as attend radio talk shows and TV interviews in the vernacular stations to popularize and mobilize the idea of engaging men and boys in the quest to end FGM/C
The project will have 440 trained male champions in the fight against FGM all over Kenya. These men will be expected to train other men and boys within their communities hence creating a critical mass of men all over the country who understands the health, physical and emotional effects of FGM and other related harmful cultural practices such as child marriages.
