Train four builders in Haiti to build safe homes

by Build Change Vetted since 2014 Site Visit Verified

Builders who lack formal training build unsafe houses. These unsafe homes are likely to collapse in earthquakes and hurricanes, putting families in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, at risk. We will provide training and certification in safer construction techniques to four builders. They will use this training throughout their careers, impacting the safety of dozens of homes and families. Certification also increases their income - a double win.

2.7 million people in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, live in informal housing built by builders without formal training. These makeshift houses are at high risk of collapsing during earthquakes and hurricanes.

It's simple: Trained builders construct safer homes. We will provide formal training and certification in disaster-resistant construction techniques to four builders in Port-au-Prince. They will receive hands-on training in all the skills they need to build disaster-resistant homes. Receiving training will also improve their earnings, as certified professionals are in demand.

Long-Term Impact

By training and certifying builders, we increase the availability of trained, qualified local builders who can rebuild and retrofit homes to be disaster-resistant. Safe homes mean safe families. Certified local builders also earn more than their untrained peers, which will bolster the local economy.
