Mental Health Matters: Empowering Young Ugandans

By Maxwell Akandwanaho | Programs Associate

Our recent volunteer hangout was more than just a fun-filled day. It was a vital opportunity to prioritize the mental health of our Uganda Unites volunteers, who dedicate countless hours to empowering young people in Uganda.

Amidst the laughter, games, and camaraderie, we created a space for our volunteers to recharge, connect, and reflect on their important work. From engaging chess battles to thought-provoking peacebuilding quizzes, the day was packed with activities that fostered both fun and personal growth.

Davin Nuwagaba, our dedicated mental health champion, delivered a powerful and insightful session that highlighted the importance of self-care for volunteers. She provided a clear understanding of mental health, explaining what it is, why it's important, and how it can impact our daily lives. Davin also offered practical advice on where to seek help if needed, emphasizing the importance of reaching out for support when facing challenges.

Recognizing the critical role of mental health education, especially among young people in Uganda, our volunteers are committed to raising awareness and providing support. Many schools in Uganda lack access to mental health services, leaving young people vulnerable to mental health issues without adequate support. By engaging with these young people and educating them about mental health, our volunteers can help ensure that they are aware of the resources available and are encouraged to seek help when needed.

Through their interactions with young people, our volunteers can provide valuable information about mental health, dispel misconceptions, and foster a supportive environment. By sharing personal experiences and offering guidance, volunteers can empower young people to prioritize their mental well-being and seek help when necessary.
