Youth Lead Solutions to Community Problems

By Maxwell Akwandanaho | Central Region Team Leader

Greeting from the Team and Volunteers at Uganda Unites,

We are writing to you today to report on the successful continuation of our youth peace club training program. With your generous donation, we were able to train 13 youth volunteers from 5 different communities in the skills and knowledge necessary to engaging youth in addition to starting and leading peace clubs.

The volunteers completed a rigorous training program that covered topics such as conflict resolution, mediation, leadership and nonviolent communication. They also learned how to organise and manage peace clubs, and how to use the tools and resources that we provided them.

After completing the training, the volunteers returned to their communities and started 21 new peace clubs. These clubs have already had a positive impact on the communities, helping to reduce conflict and violence through breaking stereotypes, and promoting peace and understanding.

For example, the Lugoba Secondary School Peace Club led a sanitation drive in the community. The club members collected trash from the streets, and they planted trees to to  educate the community of the importance of tree planting in the fight against climate change. The sanitation drive helped to improve the quality of life for the community members, and it also brought the community together to work towards a common goal.

The other peace clubs have also been active in their communities. The members of the clubs have participated in the Uganda Unites essay writing competition that has allowed them an develop their critical thinking skills by requiring them to analyze information, form arguments, and support their claims with evidence. It has also helped them to develop their research skills by requiring them to gather information from a variety of sources and evaluate the credibility of that information. As leaders through the essay writing, they have developed their communication skills because they were required to clearly and concisely express their ideas in writing.

I would like to thank you again for your generous donation. Your support has made it possible for us to train these youth volunteers and start these new peace clubs. The work that these clubs are doing is making a real difference in the lives of the young members and community members, and it is helping to create a more peaceful world.
