OVERCOMMING BARRIERS is part of a project called “Tout timoun nan lekol”, it aims to help achieve real integration of children with disabilities into schools and communities of Les Cayes and Lilavois in Haiti. This challenge wants to raise funds to support the work of America Solidaria Haiti in order to help them develop functional and learning capacities, promote skills and empowerment to enhance autonomy, and strengthen physical and social skills in children with disabilities
Unfortunately, for external reasons we have not been able to begin the challenge, which makes it difficult to accomplish all objectives we would like to achieve: a) treat at least 9644 patients (0 to 81 years old); b) Improve physical, cognitive and social abilities of 87 children to achieve their scholar integration; c) Train and develop skills in 87 children to achieve greater autonomy and acquire knowledge and vital knowledge and vital know-how for daily life; d) Train teachers to address educational plans for integration of children in Haitians schools, and parents or caregivers to provide basic assistance to children with disabilities.
We encourage you to support our project as we focus on local capacity development. Health professionals come as volunteers for at least one year to work with Haitian professionals and technical staff to strengthen their knowledge and capacities in order to improve physical therapies, health promotion and disease prevention, spread and expand mobile clinics. Also we work with education professional volunteers who assist Haitian teaches to construct integration and educational plans for with disabilities in school and train parents to help their kids to acquire self-sufficiency.
There are more than 163.667 people with disability in Haiti according to the Haitian Institute of Statistics and Informatics (IHSI, 2015) of which 69.4% do not have any level of education. The ECLAC describes a high degree of insensitivity, exclusion and discrimination in all social scopes (2015). According to Handicap International (2014) 4,000 people have had amputations as a result of the earthquake and there is a lack of local organizations working with people with disabilities in Haiti. You can help us make a difference by donating to our cause, sharing our project or volunteering with America Solidaria.
During this cycle we have worked hard with families.
When working with children in situations of disability we know the differential needs that each special case requires. For this reason, we have begun work with families, we have approached 17 families with whom we are doing a comprehensive program in which we help their parents, mothers and caregivers to enhance skills to help children and children in their processes of autonomy and development of own abilities.
Today we want to tell you that there are 93 children who day by day work with our professionals volunteer to achieve total integration in the educational community, to adapt pedagogical processes according to the needs of each child, and to sensitize their families, friends and caregivers to understand that disabilities are in ideas and prejudices, everything else is potential that can be developed.
Thanks to all those who have believed in this project! Join us, and help us continue with this work for contribuiting to the reduction of inequalities of children with disabilities in Haiti
