Toyota Insurance Challenge aims to help achieve real integration of children with disabilities into schools and communities of Les Cayes and Lilavois in Haiti. This challenge wants to raise funds to support the work of America Solidaria Haiti in order to help them develop functional and learning capacities, promote skills and empowerment to enhance autonomy, and strengthen physical and social skills in children with disabilities
There are more than 163.667 people with disability in Haiti according to the Haitian Institute of Statistics and Informatics (IHSI, 2015) of which 69.4% do not have any level of education. The ECLAC describes a high degree of insensitivity, exclusion and discrimination in all social scopes (2015). According to Handicap International (2014) 4,000 people have had amputations as a result of the earthquake and there is a lack of local organizations working with people with disabilities in Haiti
Health professionals from America Solidaria Haiti work with therapies to improve cognitive, social and physical abilities in children with disabilities, do health promotion and disease prevention through population-based interventions and home visits with mobile clinics. Education professionals from America Solidaria develop educational plans for integration of children with disabilities in school and train parents and teachers to develop capacities in autonomy for children with disabilities.
This project will: Treat at least 9644 patients (0 to 81 years old) Improve physical, cognitive and social abilities of 87 children to achieve their scholar integration. Train and develop skills in 20 children to achieve greater autonomy and acquire knowledge and vital knowledge and vital know-how for daily life. Train teachers to address educational plans for integration of children in Haitians schools, and parents or caregivers to provide basic assistance to children with disabilities.
