Every year, tons of tomatoes and other vegetables are thrown away because they are the wrong size or shape. For many families, fresh produce is too expensive to buy compared to industrial food. Their and their children's meals lack the essential nutrients of a balanced, healthy diet. By supporting this program you are preventing the farmers from throwing away excellent produce, keeping the environment cleaner, and ensuring that families in need receive visually flawed but perfectly fresh produce
Fresh produce is too expensive for many DESTITUTE FAMILIES, REFUGEES, HOMELESS, MOTHERS AND CHILDREN; thus, they miss out on some of the essential parts of a complete diet. FARMERS hate to throw away part of their produce after all their hard work and expenses only because they are not perfect enough for general sale and distribution. The ENVIRONMENT around farms and greenhouses is sadly littered with perfectly eatable produce. VEGETABLES need to be picked, packed, transported and distributed.
Crete For Life is a well-established charity in Crete that has been helping disadvantaged children and families since 2005. We are active in one of Greece's main agricultural areas, in southeast Crete, and for years, we have received and distributed fresh produce to those in need. However, we need your support to keep this project running and expand it to match the ever-growing needs. The vegetables are free, but we need help to cover the fixed costs such as collecting, storing and shipping.
LET'S STOP WASTING! PEOPLE NEED FOOD, AND YET TOO MUCH GETS THROWN AWAY. Marketing strategies for fresh produce have convinced us that vegetables must be of regular shape and aspect to be healthy and tasty. However, every plant produces both "perfect" and "imperfect" food. Sometimes, the smallest spot, or a few millimetres in size, is all the difference. To see so many fine vegetables ending up in polluting landfills while people need food is unacceptable. We are committed to reducing this waste
