“The rate of home delivery was high in Tokarpur. Apart from the home deliveries, women used to travel to Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, or Dhulikhel, the nearest town with modern hospitals, for the deliveries. The condition of the birthing room inside our health facility was in a sorry state and we could not provide good ANC and childbirth services. Moreover, we did not have a trained midwife in our team as well. Following the renovation of the birthing center by One Heart WorldWide, we are seeing substantial increase in the women seeking Antenatal and childbirth services at the birthing center. We are providing 12 childbirth services to local women in the next three months. Our main mission is to make sure that no women deliver at home, which we are hopeful to achieve in few years time. All the support we have received from One Heart is bringing a great change to pregnancy and childbirth here.”

“One Heart has been regularly guiding us to improve the quality of the service we are providing from the Tokarpur Health Facility. They have created a checklist for our health facility to improve the quality of the services. We will be concentrating our focus to improving those requirements so that we get good grade to be an ideal birthing center. We plant a peculiar flag at the home of pregnant mother for community awareness. Pregnant women are getting support from the health facility to maintain a balanced diet and hygiene with nutrition schemes and hygiene kits. These initiation is bringing positive change in our community.”

“It’s a great privilege for us to be able to deliver at the birthing center locally. The infrastructure of birthing center has improved so much better. The delivery room had new equipment and it was warm. I stayed at the postnatal room for two days. The nurses took a good care of me. I could have delivered at home if the condition of the birthing center was just like before the renovation work. If I had some problem, I could have gone to Kathmandu. I was so relieved that I could get such a good service at my own village. This saved me from the hectic of traveling as well as money that we had to spend at hospitals in Kathmandu. I am glad that I visited the birthing center during my ANC check-ups. I believe that women will feel very secure to deliver at the newly renovated Tokarpur Birthing Center.

“I was always looking forward for the Skilled Birth Attendant training. I am very happy that I am in the process of being one from the scholarship of One Heart World Wide. We were facing difficulties to manage natural deliveries, let alone the complicated ones. Because none of the medical staff working at the Tokarpur Health Facility had the training. So our only option was to refer the women to the other nearby health facilities. It was an added difficulty for the women in this rural community during pregnancy and childbirth. Thus, delivery at our birthing center was very low.
Our birthing center is also in the last phase of renovation, also supported of One Heart, along with all the needed equipment. After the completion of my SBA training, we will be able to give holistic pregnancy and childbirth service at our birthing center, which is a major progress for this locality and its people. Increasing the Antenatal check-ups and deliveries at our birthing center will be the next step, which, I believe, will naturally improves, in sync with the upgrade in the service.”

While there is still work to be done in order to ensure the safety of moms and babies at the Tokarpur Health Post Birthing Center, significant progress has been made. The first feasability study and technical assessment have been completed, and the work has begun on the ground to renovate the Birthing Center.
Our staff visited Tokarpur at the end of June and had the chance to speak with Bikalpa Adhikari, the Incharge at the Health Facility. Bikalpa has been at the post for the past two years.
“We are falling short on providing the quality maternal and neonatal health services due to the lack of adequate infrastructure at our health post. Apart from the infrastructure, we do not have a trained Skilled Birth Attendant (SBA) and essential birthing center equipment as well. ANC check-ups and deliveries at the birthing center are very low and we do not have alternative to refer most of the deliveries that come to our birthing center, elsewhere. Handling the complications is a far-cry.
Things have been slowly but effectively improving after One Heart Worldwide started its program in the Ramechhap district. We have started to conduct some deliveries here after One Heart provided Onsite Coaching and Mentoring training. We will also be getting M&H Update Training in the last week of July.
Most importantly, our birthing center is in the last phase of being fully upgraded by One Heart. One of two in the nursing staff, will be getting Skilled Birth Attendant (SBA) training in the upcoming months and we are in the process of receiving birthing center equipment as well. We are very grateful for all the support we are receiving from One Heart. It will play an instrumental role in improving the maternal and neonatal health services in Tokarpur. We are already receiving a positive affect from One Heart’s support. One Heart will leave its mark with its amazing work in the community here. I would like to extend my gratitude to One Heart on behalf of the team.”
