Tuberculosis still represents a public health problem in India, affecting millions of people. The project wants to improve health conditions of children and their relatives affected by TB in the slums of Mumbai, reducing one of the root causes: malnutrition. Aleimar, thanks to the local partner Lok Seva Sangam, will organize weekly checks of the families in charge, will supply food rations to affected people and will distribute food supplements to ease their physical recovery.
Tuberculosis still represents one of the top 10 causes of death in the world and it is a major public health problem in India, affecting millions of people every year. In the slums this infectious illness is still really common and it is often lethal. A great number of sick people tend to have continuous relapses and to manifest side effects to medicines because of malnutrition or undernutrition, which worsens their conditions and reduces their chances of recovery.
Aleimar, together with the local partner Lok Seva Sangam, wants to support the recovery of people affected by TB during the treatment period and during the following months through these activities: 1) Weekly checks aimed at helping and monitoring the administration of medicines; 2) Suppling of food rations to affected people and to their families in order to promote a balanced diet; 3) Distribution of food supplements like milk powder in order to ease the physical recovery.
The project wants to face one of the root causes of TB and prevent the risk of relapse: malnutrition. The assistance program usually lasts 6 months, but if the condition of the single person is severe, food supplements can be provided for other 6 months. Recipients will be followed for some years after the treatments in order to avoid possible relapses. This assistance will improve health conditions of direct recipients, but also will have a positive long-term impact also for the whole family.
