The shifting political landscape has many parents very concerned about their LGBTQ+ children's well-being and safety. There isn't anything more stressful for a parent than not knowing what to expect and not having the tools to comfort and guide their children through this moment.
Mama Dragons is committed to helping mothers of LGBTQ+ kids find their footing through this complex time. Mama Dragons assessed the needs of the community and is taking bold action.
In January 2025, we opened the doors to a new, private online network for our Mama Dragons community. We invited the 13,000+ mothers of LGBTQ+ children into a virtual space where they could find support, education, and empowerment on their path. We offer this community space at no charge as part of our commitment to safety, equity, and accessibility, even though it is an expense that we carry organizationally.
Since 2023, we have offered LIFT Therapy Support Groups to our members for a nominal fee. The average wait time to access behavioral health services is about six weeks. When looking for an LGBTQ+ specialist in certain areas, wait times can stretch into months. LIFT provides a safe space for parents to express their emotions, increase their understanding of mental health issues related to their kids, and helps them and their children develop coping skills and self-care techniques in this trying time.
Generous donations have allowed us to open up these sessions at no charge for a limited time. This has empowered our community of mothers to process their concerns and gain tools to help their children meet this moment. It has bolstered their own personal capacity for advocating for their children and their families in all the places decisions are made.
We are rising to meet this moment with continued support of our community of Mama Dragons and are so appreciative of the generous donors who see the value in supporting LGBTQ+ children and their families.
