Summary

The Tanomoshi Circle;"One Heritage. One Future. One Child." Japanese communities have always known what to do when the load is too heavy for a few to carry: form a circle. For centuries, the tanomoshi-ko () pooled the contributions of many. The Tanomoshi Circle is that tradition, renewed for the inverted pyramid: many hands, joined monthly, so that the children now carrying Japan's future never carry it alone. A pyramid concentrates weight downward. A circle distributes it - and holds.

Challenge

For most of history, every society stood on the same foundation: a broad base of children, holding up a narrower generation of elders. Japan's pyramid has turned upside down. Today, 29.3% of Japan's people - 36.2 million - are over 65. Just 11.1% - 13.7 million - are under 15. There are nearly three elders for every child, and the number of children has fallen for 44 consecutive years, to the lowest level ever recorded. Japan now balances on the tip of its pyramid.

Solution

For centuries, the tanomoshi-ko () pooled the contributions of many so that each member, in turn, could seize their moment - start the business, weather the storm, fund the future. Japanese immigrant communities carried the tanomoshi across the Pacific, and it financed the first shops, farms, and firms of generations who arrived with nothing but each other. Many families reading this exist as they are because, somewhere back along the line, a circle held for them.

Long-Term Impact

The Tanomoshi Circle is that tradition, renewed for the inverted pyramid: many hands, joined monthly, so that the children now carrying Japan's future never carry it alone. A pyramid concentrates weight downward. A circle distributes it - and holds. This is focused and overarching program to focus on the children we walk along into adulthood.
