The Okra Project: Feeding and Supporting Black Trans and Gender-Expansive Communities

By Gabrielle Souza | Executive Director

The Okra Project exists to meet one of the most basic and most overlooked needs in our community: consistent access to food, safety, and dignity for Black trans and gender-expansive people. We are a direct-service organization, which means our work isn't built around symbolic gestures — it's built around showing up for people in tangible, material ways, week after week.

Why This Work Matters

Black trans and gender-expansive people face compounding barriers to economic stability, safe housing, and basic necessities — barriers rooted in racism, transphobia, and systemic exclusion from employment, healthcare, and housing. These aren't abstract statistics for us; they are the lived realities of the people who come to us for support. Too often, support for this community comes in the form of public statements rather than practical resources. We were founded to close that gap — to make sure that care shows up as groceries on the table, a paid utility bill, a safe ride home, and access to the products and services that restore dignity.

What We Do

Each year, The Okra Project supports approximately 800 to 900 people through five core programs:

  • Grocery vouchers — direct support for food security
  • Hygiene and beauty product access — because dignity includes the ability to care for yourself
  • Rental and utility assistance — keeping people housed and their lights on
  • Rideshare access — safe transportation, particularly important for a community that faces heightened risk of violence and harassment in public spaces
  • Professional support vouchers — helping people access services that support their wellbeing and stability

These programs are intentionally practical. We ask what people need, and we work to provide it directly, without unnecessary barriers or bureaucracy.

Our Approach

We believe in mutual aid as infrastructure, not charity as spectacle. Our work is rooted in relationship and trust with the communities we serve, and we prioritize direct service over performative activism. We also intentionally operate independent of government funding, which allows us to remain nimble and directly accountable to the community we serve rather than to external political constraints.

Why Your Support Matters Right Now

Nonprofits serving marginalized communities are often the first to feel the impact of a shifting funding landscape, and The Okra Project is no exception. Every dollar donated through this platform goes directly toward sustaining these five programs — toward groceries, rent, transportation, and the everyday necessities that keep our community safe, fed, and stable. Your gift, no matter the size, has a direct and immediate impact on a real person's life.

Thank you for considering The Okra Project. Whether or not you're able to give today, we're grateful you took the time to learn about the work.
