EmpowerHer uplifts teenage mothers in Makueni, Kenya who face stigma, school dropout, and poverty after early pregnancies. Through education support, mentorship, and skills training, we restore hope and equip young mothers to build brighter futures for themselves and their children. Your support helps provide school fees, childcare, counseling, and vocational tools, turning despair into opportunity.
The latest data from Makueni County Hospital indicates there were 8,309 adolescent pregnancies in 2023. From this total, 341 were girls between the ages of 10-14. Poverty has been noted as a key contributor to early pregnancies with some girls engaging in early sex to either meet their personal, or family needs. The 'EmpowerHer' initiative aims at giving the girls a second chance to either resume formal schooling, or join tertiary institutions to pursue skill-based courses for self-employment.
The current situation paints a picture of 'the end of the road' for teenage mothers. Majority end up either in early marriages, or getting more children due to hopelessness. Neither the Government, nor the parents/care-givers is making any steps to provide a solution. Through the 'EmpowerHer' initiative, the teenage mothers will have a voice to speak out. An enabling environment for teenage mothers' education and economic empowerment will also be created through engagement with policymakers.
Some of the long-term Outcomes and Impact of the 'EmpowerHer' initiative include; (a) Increased enrollment of teenage mothers in schools and vocational training programs. (b) Improved self-esteem, confidence, and resilience among teenage mothers. (c) Reduced stigma and discrimination against teenage mothers. (d) Enhanced reproductive health knowledge and practices. (e) Improved economic stability and employment creation through businesses initiated and headed by teenage mothers.
