Unprecedented rains in Kerala have wreaked havoc. As the rains retreat, scores of dead bodies of humans and animals appear, sewage and drinking waters mix. People are clearing the waste, debris and dead bodies, exposing them, their families and others to contagion. A second wave of havoc is underway through outbreak of cholera and typhoid. Swasti and CMID will provide safety kits for the critical 10 day period that begins now. We want your help NOW to prevent these outbreaks and save lives.
Devastating floods have destroyed human life and settlement in Kerala, 400+ bodies of humans and animals are found as flood waters recede. Contamination of water coupled with various stages of decomposed bodies has a potential for an outbreak of cholera, typhoid and other water borne diseases. Preventive action is the priority. The people from lower socio-economic status are usually assigned the responsibility of disposing these bodies and thus making them vulnerable to such outbreaks.
We have partnered with Centre for Migration and Inclusive Development to equip the members of the lower strata of the society who are most vulnerable with a Safety Kit (with essentials) that will help the members and their families protect themselves from waterborne diseases and their outcomes. Since most efforts now are focussed on addressing relief needs of people, we want to prevent an impending epidemic from taking a toll on more lives in the aftermath.
1) Prevention of an epidemic borne from water-borne diseases. 2) Faster recovery of the system by ensuring more healthy people are involved in the rebuilding. 3) Savings for the nation in terms of number of reduced disease days and cost of treatment saved.
