TETO is a youth led non-profit organization present in 19 countries across Latin America and the Caribbean. Through the joint work of families living in extreme poverty with youth volunteers, TETO seeks to overcome poverty in slums.
TETO began its international expansion in 2001 and has been reinforced since 2005 by the support of the Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF) of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). TETO is currently working in 19 countries in Latin America: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. TETO headquarters in Chile coordinates the efforts of local offices, each of which shares basic goals and methods, while adapting the project to the particular challenges of poverty in each country.
Our mission is Work tirelessly to overcome extreme poverty in slums, through training and joint action of families and youth volunteers. Furthermore, to promote community development, denouncingthe situation in which the most excluded communities live. And lastly, to advocate for social policies with other actors in society.
TETO has been in Brazil since 2006, and is present now in 4 different states: Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná and Bahia.
In September, about 600 volunteers and dwellers helped build 51 transitional houses in 4 different slums in São Paulo, Brazil. An amazing step to help us achieve our main goal, which is A fair and poverty free society, where everyone has the opportunities needed to develop their capacities and fully exercise their rights.
But our work does not stop there. There's another construction to come, in November, when we'll act in 3 different slums and help build at least 50 transitional houses once again.
