Mid-year update

6th graders pause during Kiswahili class
6th graders pause during Kiswahili class

Hello from Kenya. Term 2 of the school year will be ending in three weeks, and we have had a great term! The highlight of this past week was our second graders' performance on monthly exams set by the examination board. There are 20 students in our second grade class and all of them scored over 400 marks out of 500. The top student scored 469 and the last scored 412. This is truly an exceptional class. (Note: Grading is different in Kenya than the US and scores above 400 are excellent.) Kenya has also announced an upcoming change to the curriculum geared toward a more skills centered approach. We still don't know what this means but it will be made clearer toward the end of the year. We will then figure out how best to adapt.

In sadder news, one of our fifth grade students lost his mother this week. His father died years ago, and his mother struggled with mental illness. He joined our school in kindergarten, after his father died, beacuse his grandmother was also unwell, an alcoholic, and unable to care for him. His mother just died of tuberculosis and the funeral was Thursday. We took the entire fifth grade class to provide support. You know, this is one of our students whose relatives tried to sell him and we got wind of it and made sure it didn't happen. He is one of the brightest in his class.

Thanks to all of you for making our work possible. These kids truly owe their education to you. Thank you!

Regards,

Kwamboka Okari
Founder and Executive Director
