One year and 4 months after the earthquake, normality is slowly coming back to Xochimilco and San Gregorio. Although many families still haven't solved their housing problems completely, most of them received assessment by our volunteering lawyers at the begining of last year, and are working on it. Kids are back in school and economic activities are recovering their usual rhythm. We recently met with some vegetable and flower producers, parents of the temporary school kids, who worked very hard to be ready for the seasons' festivities.
Christmas holidays are special times in Mexico. A lot of traditions take place like posadas, in which families and friends gather to spend time together, sing songs, drink 'ponche' and break piñatas. Something we have learned with this project is that, no matter how big a tragedy is, no matter how severe a situation is, traditions are really important to people and they're what keeps people together. Thus, we held a posada at the project's premises where we had a piñata and some gifts for all our children and their families.
As for the project's future, El Buen Socio is slowly retrieving from the area, and we have already started the process of returning the building that was 'lend' to us by the Government. This may take a little while, since we have a new government in office at federal level, and at local level as well.
We believe that our specific work there is done, and that the state of emergency is finally passing. We are happy to see that things are starting to look 'normal' in some aspects of the daily life, although we know that San Gregorio's inhabitants lives have been forever changed with the earthquake.
