Princess's Path: From Rejection to New Hope

By Mercy Kamau | Team Leader

Stacy ( not her real name)  is a 16-year-old mother living in Lucky Summer Stage, Nairobi, under the strained care of her aunt. Born in Luanda, Busia County, she is the eldest of 11 children. Her early life was marked by hardship, her biological mother, struggling with alcohol addiction, has been absent since Princess was a child, leaving her without stable parental guidance.

Her aunt, despite facing her own financial struggles and limited living space, brought Princess to Nairobi hoping to offer her a better life. Initially, the family survived on small-scale sales of githeri, but when the business collapsed, resources became scarce. Her uncle contributed little, and the household fell into deeper financial distress, leaving Stacy without basic necessities.

Stacys challenges continued at school. She dropped out of Kariobangi Primary School in Class 7 due to unmet needs, including school fees, sanitary pads, and basic clothing. Attempting to help her aunt earn a living, she worked selling githeri, but her efforts could not bridge the gap.

In a desperate attempt to meet her daily needs, Princess entered a relationship with an adult man who provided her with money in exchange for companionship. This relationship, born out of survival, led to an unplanned pregnancy.

When her pregnancy became known, Princess faced harsh rejection. Her uncle, angry and unwilling to support her, forced her out of the family home. Alone and vulnerable, she navigated pregnancy and motherhood at just 16.

Thanks to a compassionate well-wisher, Stacy was placed temporarily at the Missionaries of Charity - Mother Teresa Home, where she received shelter and care. However, after leaving the shelter, she returned to her aunt’s home only to encounter continued rejection, hostility, and emotional abuse.

Now, Stacy struggles daily to meet even the most basic needs for herself and her baby. With only one diaper per day, her child suffers from severe diaper rash. Her mental health continues to be challenged by poverty, isolation, and the pressures of early motherhood.

Her aunt has refused to allow her to return to school, saying:
"You’re already a mother, there’s no need for school anymore."

The father of Stacys child disappeared upon learning about the pregnancy, leaving her to raise her baby entirely on her own. The emotional and social stigma has left Princess feeling isolated, ashamed, and desperate at times.

Through a partnership with the Missionaries of Charity, Stacy was introduced to Mathari Children’s Fund Panairobi, where she found hope and support. She is now enrolled in a vocational training program in garment making, while also receiving psychosocial support, counseling, and soft skills training.

Since joining the program, Princess has shown remarkable resilience. She is caring for her baby more consistently, gaining confidence, and embracing her potential. The organization provides her with monthly hygiene support, including reusable sanitary pads, bar soap, and body gel, helping ease her daily struggles.

Stacy is determined to create a better future for herself and her child. She dreams of completing her vocational training, securing a job, or starting her own business in garment making. Her goal is to achieve financial independence and break free from the cycle of poverty that has defined much of her young life.

"I want to finish my training, get a job or start my own business. I want to support my child and never go back to that place of shame."

With MCFP support, Stacy has the potential not only to reclaim her dignity and build a secure future but also to inspire other young girls facing similar hardships. By empowering Stacy, we are investing in the hope, strength, and resilience of a young mother determined to rise above adversity.

Join us with a gift of $50 to empower a teenage mother like Stacy with safety, skills, and hope. Your support helps her rebuild her life, secure her future, and give her child a brighter tomorrow. Together, we can transform hardship into opportunity.
