Through Leadership Initiatives' International Internship Program, Simar, Riahna, and Alexandra are partnering with Abdulshakur in the Ibrahim Bako community. He creates gowns, dresses, skirts, shirts, and traditional women's designs while training four young apprentices. Together, the team is developing practical strategies to strengthen the business and support his vision for a recognized women's fashion house.
At 20, Abdulshakur Babaji Garba, known as Oga Abdul, has already built a women's tailoring business from his own savings after completing a five-year apprenticeship. But outdated equipment, frequent power outages, limited advertising, and no formal branding or financial record system make it difficult to expand production, reach more customers, and manage the business efficiently.
Simar, Riahna, and Alexandra are working with Abdulshakur to address the specific barriers limiting his business. Their plan focuses on improving sewing equipment and backup power, creating a stronger brand and social media presence, and introducing organized financial records. These improvements can help him produce more efficiently, reach new customers, and make better-informed business decisions.
With stronger tools and business systems, Abdulshakur can build on the trust he has already earned through quality work, fair prices, attention to detail, and keeping his promises. Greater production capacity and visibility can support long-term growth, strengthen the training he provides to four apprentices, and move him closer to his goal of building a recognized women's fashion house in Bauchi.
