Supporting Entrepreneurs Through Partnership

By Jessica Bailly | Director of Development

Since the start of the International Internship Program, interns have been working alongside 60 local entrepreneurs across Northern Nigeria to strengthen and grow small businesses that support families and local economies. Through close collaboration with business owners and guidance from Project Coordinators, interns spend several months learning about each business, understanding community context, and developing practical tools that support long-term, sustainable growth. This hands-on partnership allows interns to gain real-world business experience while helping entrepreneurs expand opportunities for themselves and their communities.

One of the core components of the program is branding and business identity development. Interns study visual identity, color theory, customer perception, and local market dynamics to help business partners clarify how they present their work to customers. Across the program, interns create professional logo drafts, color palettes, slogans, and design concepts that reflect local culture and the unique personality of each business. These branding tools are designed for practical use on storefront signs, marketing materials, product labels, and digital platforms, helping entrepreneurs stand out and attract customers with confidence.

In addition to branding, interns focus heavily on financial tracking and business literacy. Working directly with business partners, interns develop simple, easy-to-use financial tools that help owners record daily sales, track expenses, calculate profits, and identify which products or services generate the greatest return. These tools are intentionally designed to function without internet access or advanced technology, ensuring they can be used consistently in any setting. By building clear record-keeping habits, business owners are better equipped to make informed decisions about pricing, purchasing, savings, and future growth.

Throughout the program, interns demonstrate strong commitment, attention to detail, and genuine care for the success of their business partners. Their thoughtful planning and consistent engagement result in tangible resources that business owners can continue using long after the internship concludes.

In the final phase of the program, interns prepare microgrant proposals to support the next stage of business development. These proposals identify priority needs, outline realistic growth goals, and present a clear plan for how targeted funding could strengthen operations. Whether funding is directed toward equipment, workspace improvements, materials, or expanded services, proposals are developed collaboratively with business partners and Project Coordinators to ensure solutions are sustainable and community-focused.

Beyond individual businesses, Leadership Initiatives is also investing in community-level infrastructure that strengthens the broader environment in which entrepreneurs operate. In communities such as Birshi Gandu and Sabon Layi, new classroom blocks are replacing unsafe structures and reducing overcrowding, allowing children to learn in safer, more supportive environments. In Doka, a solar-powered clean water borehole is underway to provide reliable access to safe water and reduce the daily burden of long-distance water collection. These infrastructure projects help improve education, reduce health and economic strain, and create more stable conditions for families and small businesses alike.

Together, these efforts ensure that entrepreneurs participating in the International Internship Program are supported not only through direct business tools, but also through stronger community systems. As access to education, clean water, and essential services improves, business owners are better positioned to grow their enterprises and build more secure futures for their families.

We are deeply grateful for your generosity, which makes this partnership, real-world learning, and long-term community impact possible.

Warmly,

Leadership Initiatives
