Fostering self-sufficiency in rural women

By Smruti Das | Assistant Consultant for Shivia (Odisha)

It is with great pleasure that I am sending you this report from Gajapatri District in Odisha where we are training rural women to create their own kitchen gardens.  Together with our local NGO Partner, VIEWS, we are empowering women to become self-sufficient through sustainable agriculture.

Our training programme in small-scale farming includes demonstrations on how to make bio-fertilisers and pesticides using readily available natural ingredients, as you can see in the photos. Each farmer is also given seeds in order to grow seasonal vegetables such as onions, spring greens, tomatoes, aubergine, radish and green beans.  The main purpose of the kitchen garden is for these women to grow vegetables to feed their family throughout the year.  However, we have witnessed how the training programme has empowered our farmers to become micro-entrepreneurs by selling their surplus produce in the local markets.  Our photos feature three such women - Sumitra, Premi and Minasi - who have each earned Rs. 2,500 (about £22/USD 30) from selling vegetable from their first seasonal crop.

Thanks to you and other donors to this programme, we are witnessing the transformative power of our community based training in agriculture.  I look forward to sharing more stories of success very soon.

Namaste!
