The Unexpected Gift Party

By Callie Stezar | Director

Unexpected Day!
Unexpected Day!

During the final week of Take2, we host a number of parties for campers.
One of our favorites is called the Unexpected Gift Party. This event is
described to campers as a fun opportunity to practice gift giving and gift
receiving etiquette. But there’s one caveat: The gifts are truly
unexpected, in both delightful and disappointing ways. As the bags are
passed around one-by-one, campers soon uncover decorative gift bags filled
with items such as a stapler, a candy bar, a counselor’s stick figure
drawing, Q-tips, and a bottle of water.

“Q-tips!?” the first response echos, followed by silence. Behind me in the
corner is a counselor who has already spent ten minutes coaching this
camper on how to receive a terrible gift. She anticipates that this might
require some extra support. Pointing to a list of scripts they developed
earlier that morning, the counselor patiently waits. “This is great. Thank
you,” says the camper, using the written cue. The counselors are already
celebrating this victory, but the camper isn’t yet finished. Veering from
the script, he adds with growing enthusiasm, “I could really use this to…
clean my collector’s edition cars at home!” Success.

Your gifts to Take2 have given campers 12 years of wonderfully unexpected
moments. Help us keep the journey going!

Sincerely,

Callie Stezar
