Twende will offer free Creative Capacity Building workshops for girls and women, allowing them to learn creative problem solving through technological innovation without the stigma or barriers they may face in local schools. During the workshop, participants learn the fundamentals of design thinking and innovation by identifying a challenge they currently face and then developing and building their own technology to address that challenge. Transportation and meals will be included.
The statistics are discouraging. According to a 2019 UNICEF Study, only 27% of girls complete upper secondary school in Tanzania; only 6% among the poorest. In 2020, UNICEF reported 31% of girls in Tanzania are married before the age of 18, and 5% before the age of 15. Until very recently, pregnant girls and mothers were excluded from school, denying them the opportunities to receive the education that can help them learn to solve their own issues and improve their circumstances.
These workshops are being targeted to what has traditionally been an excluded and marginalized group, to help ensure they receive the attention and educational foundation needed to help them learn to creatively solve their own problems and become contributing members of the economic community.
As girls and women gain parity in education and educational opportunities, they will become equipped to be active participants in helping solve their communities' challenges, such as poverty, educational equity, and economic growth.
