Action Works Nepal (AWON) would like to express our sincere thanks and gratitude to all 54 passionate donors for their generous support, encouragement and love to girls from Jumla, Nepal.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Karnali a town in Jumla region of Nepal ranks the very last in Human Development Index. Its citizens have very short life expectancy; only 37 - 46 years. Female literacy is only 10% where as national figure 34%. The school drop-out rate and repetition rate is also very high (8-20%) due to poor quality of education and strong bias against girl children. Sexual and gender-based violence is very high. Empowering girl children can break this chain of violence and give girl children a chance to improve their lives.
How will this project solve this problem?
AWON proposed a project that will focus on girl children in Jumla and teach them the very basics of literacy, how to write their name. While focusing on supporting girl children’s education, AWON volunteers will also work with their parents to understand the importance of education and investing in their girls. The literacy classes will also offer basic human rights education on the new constitution in Nepal and the rights of children and women in this neglected, rural, post-conflict area of Nepal.
Potential Long Term Impact
2/3 of the world's uneducated children are girls, and 2/3 of the world's illiterate adults are women. Numerous studies have demonstrated that educating women and girls is the single most effective strategy to ensure the well-being and health of children including reducing childhood and maternal mortality, improve child nutrition and health, lower birth rates, and increase women's political and economic participation. By investing in the future of these girl children, AWON hopes to support them to make a difference in their community and allow them to contribute to a brighter future.
November 2013 Update:
When AWON received the message from Global Giving about the disbursement of the funds on 12 November 2013 , the project immediately started initial activities. AWON selected 3 schools out of the 20 schools that AWON supports to particularly focus on marginalized girls.
AWON’s facilitators conducted a meeting with the school management committee, student leaders, teachers and parents in order to improve quality teaching of girls in the schools. The meeting concluded with a strong commitment from the community to achieve quality results. The School Management Committee, parents, students and teachers also agreed to meet once in a month to review the activities in order to insure positive progress. The bridging course, supporting documents also started to support.
