Each year, Teach for Taiwan (TFT) recruits and trains 65 teachers to work in schools located in remote and under-resourced areas. TFT aims to create a movement of lifelong leaders working to eliminate education inequity in Taiwan, ensuring that all children, regardless of their background, can have access to quality education and opportunities to realise their full potential.
Over 800 remote elementary schools serve 60,000 children, and many face severe resource shortages and risk closure. Students in rural areas struggle academically at twice the rate of urban peers, with a three-year gap between the most advantaged and disadvantaged. The number of children not reaching basic proficiency is rising, disproportionately affecting rural areas (TIMSS 2019). To address this inequality, it is crucial to prioritize support for these regions and close the learning gap.
We recruit passionate young leaders to teach full-time in high-needs areas for two years. TFT Fellows complete over 500 hours of professional training to provide quality education to students in need. Beyond addressing the demand for teachers in disadvantaged areas, we build a network of influence to drive change. By fostering partnerships with local schools and communities, we work together to improve student outcomes, embracing the idea that "It takes a village to raise a child."
After two years, our program Alumni emerge with vision and deep understanding of the challenges on the front line. Some continue to work in schools, leading from the ground up, and some take on key roles in fields such as education policy and social innovation. We are building a network of educational institutes, equity-minded organisations, businesses, government bodies and passionate people to eliminate educational inequity in Taiwan.
