The Abba's House Children's Center educational and feeding project will provide educational materials, teaching, and meals for 100-150 children living in Cienfuegos, Dominican Republic who are traumatized by homelessness, abandonment, and/or extreme poverty. Items needed include children and teacher furniture, bulletin boards, computers, printers, books, white boards, art supplies, maps, rulers, calculators, and funds to provide two meals per day, five days per week, per child.
Cienfuegos is a barrio located in the Dominican Republic. In close proximity to Cienfuegos is a landfill where many of the children currently served by the Center were originally located, scavenging through the refuse looking for food or items to sell to survive. One hundred children were rescued from the dump and now receive limited tutoring and meals at Abba's House Children's Center. We would like to expand these services to at least 50 additional children and furnish the educational center.
By expanding our feeding program we will immediately save another 50 children from sex and labor exploitation and starvation. In addition, by enhancing our current tutoring program to a full educational program, these children will have the opportunity to gain the literacy and mathematical skills needed to enroll in a vocational program, ultimately making them able to support themselves and their families, thus potentially breaking the cycle of poverty for the entire village of Cienfuegos.
Rescuing children from scavenging in the dump will immediately impact their health as ample nourishment will stave off many diseases to include malnutrition. Providing an enhanced educational experience beyond tutoring will provide children with the literacy and mathematical skills necessary to enable enrollment in a vocational school. The economic benefits of a vocational education to the families of the graduates will be life changing and will also positively impact the Cienfuegos community.
